BASEL 2016: More NEWS from TUDOR

Once again Tudor comes out swinging and in my opinion, though the show has yet to even begin, it will be tough to knock them off the top spot as "BEST IN SHOW".

BASEL 2016: Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage

The Seastrong Diver Heritage is a contemporary interpretation of the first Alpina diving watch. In 1969, the Seastrong had already incorporated all the specific technical constraints relating to scuba diving, then still in its early days. It distinguished itself by its “Super Compax” water-resistance technology and its double screw-lock crown, that is still featured in its current version. The 4 o’clock crown controls winding and time-setting, while the one at 2 o’clock rotates the inner bezel ring that measures dive times. This information so vital to divers is protected from inadvertent handling by being fitted inside the case. It is visible through a glass box, which in this new model reflecting the 1969 original is nonetheless made of sapphire crystal rather than hesalite, making it complex to produce but equally spectacular to look at. The Seastrong Diver Heritage is a watch designed for everyday use and is pleasant to wear in daily adventures.

BASEL 2016: Eberhard Scafograf 300

Introduced in the 1950s, the Scafograf has evolved over the years to conquer the hearts of divers everywhere, not least thanks to its sturdy good looks and guaranteed water-resistance to 100, 200, 300, 400, 750, even 1,000 metres! Now Eberhard & Co pays tribute to this icon of the deep with an almost identical replica of the original Scafograf, which it has reinterpreted in the same sporting vein. The robust steel case, unidirectional rotating bezel in ceramic and, unusually for a dive watch, date at 3 o'clock remain highly desirable attributes of this timepiece, which is equipped with a safety valve to release helium from inside the case. This new Scafograf 300 ensures optimum reliability, and promises to stand up to shocks and pressure. The supremely legible dial, highlighted with Superluminova, makes this an essential dive watch that is equally at home underwater as for everyday casual-chic wear.

BASEL 2016: Tudor Heritage Black Bay Bronze

This piece inherits the most characteristic elements from Tudor's eloquent history in dive watches: the domed crystal, the prominent winding crown from the 1958 model, dubbed Big Crown, the angular "snowflake" hands from the 1970s, and the beige woven jacquard strap, a nod to the French sailors who made their own straps from elastic recovered from rescue parachutes. The bronze case is a reminder of the bronze used for the helmets in the heroic early days of diving. Add to this a mechanical automatic movement with COSC chronometer certification, - developed, manufactured and assembled in-house – and there can be no doubting that this new Black Bay Bronze will become a partner for life, slowly developing a unique patina over time to match its owner's lifestyle.

BASEL 2016: Victorinox I.N.O.X. Professional Diver

Form serves function in this authentic professional measurement instrument. A certified diving watch in accordance with the rigorous NIHS 92-11 Swiss watch industry norms, it goes beyond the criteria imposed by these standards. In all, it has been subjected to 130 tests specifically developed to ensure its sturdiness and its functionality. This anti-magnetic model ensures maximum visibility from a 25 cm distance in the darkness prevailing in the ocean’s depths. It can withstand dives to at least 200 metres. It is perfectly resistant to thermal shocks, condensation and vibrations. Its bevelled unidirectional rotating bezel – a time control system that is mandatory on a diving watch – appears to be sculpted with a knife. Three years of development, six months of testing and 421 prototypes were needed to develop this model representing the epitome of uncompromising quality.

BASEL 2016: Eterna Super KonTiki Chronograph

Boasting a sporting pedigree thanks to a unidirectional rotating bezel, this is the first watch in the KonTiki collection to be fitted with a flyback chronograph movement which Eterna has developed and produced in-house. Apparently simple but in reality extremely complex to make, the flyback function – which measures a new elapsed time without having to stop the chronograph first – is proof of Eterna's comprehensive watchmaking expertise. Indeed, this calibre joins an already substantial family of 39 in-house movements. The KonTiki collection is named after the 1947 expedition led by Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl. Guided by Eterna watches, he and his crew successfully crossed the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft. With its impressive steel case and indications that remain perfectly legible in all conditions, the Super KonTiki Chronograph embodies the thrill of adventure and reliability better than ever before.

BASEL 2016: Breitling Avenger Bandit

Lightness, safety and precision are crucial attributes in the world of naval aviation. The Avenger Bandit is a COSC-certified chronograph that lives in step with the take-offs and landings on the decks of aircraft carriers. These “ocean fortresses” govern the demanding features that Breitling has incorporated into the Avenger Bandit. Its 45 mm case is lightened by the use of satin-brushed titanium, a favourite metal in the field of aviation. The graduated rotating bezel is topped by engraved stencil-type numerals and distinguished by its four rider tabs, a classic signature feature on Breitling watches serving to memorize times. The non-slip grip of the screw-lock crown and chronograph pushers guarantees optimal handling. The strap is made of rubber combined with a supple, sturdy and light high-tech textile fibre exterior. These technical attributes make the Avenger Bandit an authentic instrument for professionals embodying a world of daunting feats and the most extreme missions.

BASEL 2016: Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman

The new Khaki Navy Frogman captures an entire facet of Hamilton's history as well as the early days of professional dive watches. Created for US naval frogmen, it was revealed to the public on-screen in the 1951 film The Frogmen, an appearance that marked the beginning of a fabulous collaboration between Hamilton and Hollywood. The Khaki Navy Frogman scores high on design as well as for its technical qualities, and of course meets the requirements of an authentic dive watch: screw-lock crown protection, unidirectional rotating bezel, oversized hour-markers with a Superluminova coating, helium valve to equalise internal and external pressure, and water-resistance to 1,000 metres. Last but not least, the rubber strap features an eye-catching tone-on-tone central section and a ribbed exterior to create pleasing texture and colour contrasts.
